Frequently Asked Questions

Rhinoplasty is a functional and aesthetic procedure to reshape the nose. The nose is the most important organ in the center of our face, providing the unique expression of the face. People want to undergo rhinoplasty to achieve the expression they want to see when they look in the mirror and to achieve the ideal beauty concept for them.

Rhinoplasty is not a painful procedure, but there will be a feeling of tightness caused by both the facial edema and the bandages used. Some patients may experience a mild sensation of pain, but this can be relieved with simple painkillers such as paracetamol. If a tampon is inserted into the nose, a slight burning sensation may occur temporarily.

One of the most important benefits of the preoperative consultation is to determine the patient’s expectations and to find out to what extent the surgeon can meet these expectations.

Patients usually imagine an ideal face and nose structure, according to the perception of beauty that their sociocultural environment gives them. The patient explains this ideal nose image to the surgeon, and the surgeon tries to create a nose that pleases the patient, their environment, and himself/herself as the person performing the surgery. In the preoperative consultation, the doctor must understand how realistic the patient’s expectations are.

In addition, the preoperative consultation is very important to determine the deformities that need to be corrected on the nose. The doctor examines the patient’s skin structure, cartilage structure, facial scars, if there is any other medical history, makes the necessary plans for the surgery and determines the ideal nose structure for the patient.

The main goal of the surgery is to create a natural and better looking nose that fits the person’s face.

The outcome of the surgery depends on the patient’s age, cartilage and bone structure, skin structure, and the doctor performing the surgery. In addition, factors such as smoking or non-smoking and the rate of wound healing are also important for the post-operative recovery period.

Rhinoplasty is an operation usually preferred by young adults. Today, with the development of technology, the convenience of the surgery has increased and there are patients in their 50s and 60s who wish to undergo this surgery.

It is very important that the physiological functions of the nose are preserved while the shape of the nose is changed. Rhinoplasty does not result in obstruction of nasal breathing, and even if there are mechanical obstructions, such as septal deviation (nasal septum curvature) the size of the nasal turbinates emanating from the nasal sidewall, these should be identified during the preoperative examination and corrected at the same time during rhinoplasty. In this way, rhinoplasty becomes not only an aesthetic operation, but also a functional one.

There are two approaches to rhinoplasty. One is the endonasal approach, i.e. the closed technique of rhinoplasty, and the other is the external approach, i.e. the open technique of rhinoplasty.

Since all incisions in the closed technique of rhinoplasty are inside the nose, no scars are left after the surgery when viewed from the outside. In open technique rhinoplasty, the procedure is performed through a small incision in the so-called columella, which is located in the middle of both nostrils.

Since this incision is closed with aesthetic sutures at the end of the surgery and remains on the lower part of the nose, there is no visible scar.

One of the most important things you should be aware of before a rhinoplasty is medication use. Occasional use of aspirin or some painkillers should be avoided, as they can cause bleeding during surgery.

Otherwise, if you are in pain, you can contact your doctor and discuss what kind of painkillers you should take. Smoking is also a condition that should be stopped before the surgery. You should also not smoke for 2 weeks after the surgery.

Alcohol consumption is also a condition that we should avoid before surgery. Both smoking and alcohol are negative factors that affect postoperative nutrition and delay recovery.

Recently, the number of male patients undergoing rhinoplasty has increased, as men care about their appearance just as much as women.

Today, 30-40% of patients undergoing rhinoplasty are male. The rhinoplasty we perform on male patients is a little different than it is on women. This is because very exaggerated changes can result in a feminine facial expression. This is a situation that we do not want in male patients.

In particular, excessive engraving of the nasal dorsum and excessive lifting of the tip of the nose are the main reasons that create this feminine image. When performing rhinoplasty on male patients, it is necessary to pay close attention to these points.

You can take a shower the day after surgery, provided it is not very hot. Excessive steam and heat can cause existing dressings and splints to loosen.

Also, the water should not touch the face and nose directly. Therefore, it is advantageous to wash the hair separately from the body. The nasal splint will remain on the outside of the nose for about one week. In this one week it will not be possible to wash completely because of the splint and in the second week because we will support the nasal dorsum with plasters to reduce the edema.

At the end of the second week, when all the bandages are removed, you can take a bath without any problems.

In open technique rhinoplasty, there are sutures on the skin in the section called the columella, which separates the two nostrils at the tip of the nose. These sutures are removed on the 7th day. There are self-fusing sutures in the nose that do not need to be removed. Applying antibiotic creams to the sutured area is good for healthy recovery.

One of the most important moments of rhinoplasty is the process of bone shaping. This process is performed in classical rhinoplasty with various surgical instruments and micromotors.

In ultrasonic rhinoplasty, this procedure is performed very gently with a surgical ultrasound system, without damaging the soft tissues and cartilage.

This technique offers a significant advantage over traditional methods in terms of swelling and bruising that can occur around the eyes, especially in patients with curved noses or thick bones.

After rhinoplasty, 1 week of rest is usually sufficient. Generally, patients are advised to stay away from work and other important activities for a week to facilitate the recovery process.

2-3 weeks after surgery, about 70% of the surgical symptoms in the nose disappear and the new shape of the nose begins to appear. However, more can be seen about 6 weeks after surgery, when about 80-85% of all surgical symptoms have healed.

The recovery process after rhinoplasty also depends on the patient’s compliance with the surgeon’s recommendations, smoking and drinking alcohol, healthy diet and lifestyle.

Rhinoplasty is an operation that can be performed at any time of the year. The only exception is during the summer.

You should not expose yourself to direct sunlight for 3 months after the surgery. If you go on vacation to the seaside in the summer, we suggest you have the surgery after the vacation.

– Avoid strenuous exercise for at least two weeks. Avoid group sports such as basketball or volleyball for six weeks. Shortly, avoid activities where your face could be hit with a heavy object.

– Do not go swimming. Because your nose is very sensitive, swimming and especially diving will move your nose while it is still in recovery. Also, the chlorine that gets into your nose can harm you. Do not go to the swimming pool for 2 months and do not go to the sea for 1 month.

– Do not blow your nose for two weeks.

– Do not eat foods that require a lot of chewing.

– Avoid excessive gestures for 2-3 weeks.

– Do not brush your teeth too hard.

– Get used to clothes that you can easily put on and take off, with buttons on the front so they do not hit your nose.

– Do not use rimmed glasses for the first 2-3 months. If you must wear glasses, prefer lightweight, rimless glasses and set up a system where the glasses are held up using a sterile patch, so they do not rest on your nose.

– Protect your skin from sunlight for three months. It is very important to always put sunscreen on your face before going out in the sun, because too much sun exposure can cause permanent discoloration.

– Do not smoke for the first three weeks. This advice applies for three weeks before and after surgery.

Since edema forms in the nose after rhinoplasty procedures, a tampon is usually placed, but most often a silicone airway tampon is preferred to allow the patient to breathe.

Sometimes tampons are not used for minimal procedures or special self-fusing tampons are used.

Although it varies from person to person, there may be significant swelling for the first 3-4 days after surgery. After 3-4 weeks, this swelling goes down significantly.

It may take 4-6 months for the edema in the nose to completely resolve and the nose to gain its desired shape. For this reason, postoperative checks are very important at the 6th week, 3rd month, 6th month and first year.

Yes, rhinoplasty is not an easy procedure. This is because the creation of a new nose that fits the face slightly changing the characteristic structure of the face, while maintaining the functionality of the nose, depends on both the experience of the doctor and the harmony between the patient and the doctor.

It may take 4-6 months for the edema in the nose to completely resolve and the nose to gain its desired shape. For this reason, postoperative checks are very important at the 6th week, 3rd month, 6th month and first year.

Each surgeon chooses a different approach to show the expected result of the procedure. Drawings, photos and various Photoshop programs can be used for this purpose.

The image on the computer cannot give a definite and guaranteed result about the postoperative situation, but only an approximate picture and this situation should be known to the patients.

In an aesthetic rhinoplasty, all types of nasal breathing problems (such as deviation, valve collapse, concha size) are treated simultaneously.

It is the best option to perform these two surgeries at the same time. Because the parts that are removed during the breathing surgery can be used for the plastic surgery part.

Although the duration of the procedure varies depending on the procedure and technique used, it can take 2-6 hours. However, on average it is about 3 hours.

After surgery, the nasal splint is removed 1 week later, but the nasal dorsum is supported with plasters for 1 week to reduce edema, so the entire face make up cannot be done for the first 2 weeks.

During this time, concealer can be applied around the eyes if you prefer dermatological products. At the end of the 2 weeks, after the plasters are removed, the skin may peel a bit and some blackheads may appear. To eliminate such problems, you can clean the face with facial cleansing gels and alcohol-free tonics with light movements.

During this exfoliation phase of the skin, it is important to avoid excessive makeup and let the skin breathe. It is advisable to avoid excessive skin cleansing and exfoliation for 2 months.
